VOLTRON Lion Force Chronology

Compiled by Shannon Muir

THIRD DIMENSION SEASON TWO
Released in 1999-2000, CGI (computer graphics) episodes

* The format of this chronology will be a bit different than the prior series, in part because each episode shows titles! Also will list notable trivia related to the prior series. Right now, the descriptions will try to be minimal so to not provide many spoilers. Also, the episodes are listed in the order they originally aired, which may or may not correspond to production number order or correct story order.*

18) THE VOLTRON FORCE STRIKES BACK by Marc Handler

After rescuing Lance, the Voltron Force makes their way back to Arus determined to stop Zarkon by any means necessary since the Lions have been destroyed. But Queen Ariella shows them that the Lions are truly more than metal and science.

Notable trivia from this episode: *This is episode 3 of an arc that includes "Troika Moons" and "Queen Ariella," but did not air in the Spring of 1999 in the U.S. like the rest of the arc.

* The five robot lions must have chosen to operate as a single Voltron unit for generations, before Haggar split them up. This leads me to believe the magical lions were so badly injured they needed all those years to recoup their energies before the space explorers arrival, and that in some ways the "reawakening" of the lions really was a well-timed coincidence. Also, I can only take the interpretation at this point that Alfor's "building the lions" means he was involved with it able for human hosts to be in the robot lions, but perhaps even then he was just an instrument of the magicial lions.

[More commentary to come, this episode changes a lot of past assumptions about the history of Voltron... not necessarily for the bad. I'm still absorbing it all...]

19) STEALTH VOLTRON by Marc Handler

Black Draco reappears and steals Yellow Lion's lair. In the process of trying to recover the lair, the Voltron Force learns how to access an alternate dimension where they find out Voltron completely reconfigures into a different model.

Notable trivia from this episode: * The alternate dimension gateway Allura obrains the key to was originally built by a different ancient race. This is the second mention of an older, ancient race in the Denubian Galaxy. The first was the Darians, the original underground inhabitants of Planet Zaul who mysteriously disappeared. Why did these ancient races all leave the Denubian Galaxy, and when?

* The gateway to the alternate dimension is at the top of a mountain. Interestingly enough, Allura first learns of the existence of the alternate dimension of Elsu (where Coran's wife Leda and son Garrett have been living for years) in a remote mountain village during the original series. It leaves the door open for a potential connection, as there are clearly multiple alternatate dimensions and none have official names (according to Pamela Hickey & Dennys McCoy, whom I asked at San Diego ComiCon '99).

20) GLADIATIORS by Pamela Hickey & Dennys McCoy

Zarkon calls upon an ancient law in the Arusian books where he can challenge the best Arusian fighter, with severe consequences for forfeiting the fight. Lance is ultimately chosen to battle Lotor, though his hot-headed temper is quite the cause for concern. Meanwhile, Haggar and Zarkon are in the alternate dimension with Zarkon insisting on causing a rift with science, not magic.

Notable trivia from this episode: * This is NOT the first time this ancient law has been invoked. Lotor uses it in the episode where he arrives in the original series. That time, Keith's rank is NOT a problem and he and Lotor lock swords -- with Keith almost dying in the process. So none of this should have been a surprise to Allura when Zarkon invokes the law... or has five years clouded her memory?

21) DOMINUS GOES HOME by Pamela Hickey & Dennys McCoy

After being rescued by the Voltron Force, Allura tries to make the shonga Dominus the new Castle pet... with less than pleasing results. When Allura finally realizes she has to take Dominus back home to the Stealth dimension he comes from, it gives Haggar and Lotor the opportunity to turn Dominus evil again and join forces with Kolak the Hunter.

Notable trivia from this episode: * This episode was screened at San Diego ComiCon '99 before Season Two begin airing.

22) THE HUNTER by Scott Guy

A distress call lures the Voltron Force to an alternate dimension, where they meet Kolak the Hunter -- one of the race that tamed the dracons that form Dracotron. Kolak is determined to use his superior Stealth technology to turn the Voltron Force into biomechanical beings like his own race, and Pidge's agile skills and computer smarts may be their only hope.

Notable trivia from this episode: * This episode clearly aired out of order originally, as Kolak is already known to the Voltron Force in "Dominus Goes Home."

23) CONSIDER THE ALTERNATIVES by Mark Hoffemeier

When Lance and Lotor are sucked into Claw Mountain after Lotor finds a way to open the portal, we get a view of an alternate dimension where a eccentric beaucratic Lotor runs Voltron and commands the Castle of Lions, and where the people who should comprise the Voltron Force are a bunch of rebels. Can this alternate Voltron be brought back to the side of good and right?

Notable trivia from this episode: *

24) MIND GAMES by Kelly Ward

Allura realizes that the Voltron Force can use mind techniques to manipulate their lions without being in the cockpit. Pidge isn't willing to try these new techniques because on his home planet of Balto everyone was telepathic, but his abilities never seemed to develop and he was an outcast. When the Voltron Force fights Zarkon and the forces of Doom, they may lose everything if Pidge doesn't fight to try and learn these mental skills.

Notable trivia from this episode: * This episode clarifies that Pidge's birth and adoptive families were both from Planet Balto.

25) RAID ON GALAXY GARRISON by Marc Handler

The Voltron Force and Coran launch a daring plan to convince the space pirates to trade Amalgamus for profit. Once they get him back, Amalgamus is repaired and together they launch an attack to drive Zarkon, Lotor, and Haggar from Galaxy Garrison.

Notable trivia from this episode: *

26) CASTLE DOOM DEAD AHEAD

Haggar tricks the Voltron Force into a haunted Castle Doom replica where she plays on their nightmares.
